Working During Pregnancy

If you are a working mother-to-be; Below are 11 tips for you.

Stay Healthy at Work

- Fight Morning Sickness. Keep carbohydrate-rich foods such as crackers and popcorn on your table.

- Don't Skip Meals. Eat at least 3 meals a day as healthy as possible. Eat nutritious snacks like carrots and bananas to keep your blood sugar levels stable.

- Drink Plenty of Water. Staying hydrated throughout the day raises body fluids, nourishes your growing baby and helps you maintain your energy levels.

- Move. Get up once an hour and take a tour of the office. Constantly sitting or standing causes blood clots, varicocele and swelling.

- Fight Fatigue. Getting enough sleep is very important. Getting 10 to 11 hours of sleep a day is not unusual for pregnant women. At work, try to arrange rest breaks on a sofa, or at least with your feet up.

- Leave the Workplace on Time. Try not to wait until the end of the day. You also need time to relax and unwind. Remember that stress hormones make childbirth difficult.

Pregnancy Leave

- Know the Law. Find out how long the maternity leave lasts, how much of it is paid and how much is free.

- Do your homework. Research the company's policy on maternity leave. Read the personnel handbook. Talk to the human resources department about paid and unpaid leave.

- Consider Timing. It's usually fine to wait for the 1st trimester to tell your employer you're pregnant. However, if you are having a difficult pregnancy or you have frequent morning sickness, you can share your situation sooner.

- Consider Alternatives. Take into account situations that you can't control, such as being unable to find a caregiver after the baby is born, or that you may be too physically exhausted to return to work. Think twice about using all your vacation rights for maternity leave, it might be wise to save some for later.

- Anticipate Your Boss' Concerns. Your employer may be concerned about how long you will be off and how your job will be done during that time. Think about how your business will run in your absence.
