What are the Complications (Risks) of Assisted Reproductive Techniques?

Some complications may develop during treatment;

Multiple Pregnancy: This is the most common complication. How many healthy embryos to keep and deliver is a double decision. If too many babies have been conceived, taking 1 or 2 of them increases the chances of the others surviving.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): If a woman's eggs are overstimulated, they can grow too large and cause pain. Mild to moderate symptoms usually go away without treatment, but pregnancy can delay recovery. Rarely, fluid may accumulate in the abdominal and thoracic cavities, causing abdominal distension and shortness of breath. Severe cases require immediate treatment. Young women with polycystic ovarian syndrome are more likely to have OHSS than other women.

Bleeding or Infection: Like any invasive procedure, there is a risk of bleeding and infection with assisted reproductive techniques.

Low Weight Birth: The biggest trigger for this is multiple pregnancy.

Birth Defects: There is some concern about the relationship between assisted reproductive techniques and birth defects. However, more research is needed to confirm this.
