What Are the Risks of Multiple Pregnancies?

Risks in Twin Pregnancies

  • Early birth
  • Preeclampsia in pregnancy
  • Gestational Diabetes
  • Problems due to Abnormal Placental Placement
  • Anemia
  • cesarean section
  • Bleeding after childbirth
  • Posture disorder in the hands and feet of babies trapped in the uterus
  • Anomaly in Infants

In addition, in multiple pregnancies, one or more of the babies may have developmental disorders (Discordant growth), and in some of the cases, the reason for this is blood exchange between the babies.

Premature babies are more likely to have complications, and they can cause permanent damage or disability.

Premature Birth in Multiple Pregnancy

Among the risks seen in multiple pregnancies, the most serious is premature birth. The mean week of delivery is 36 in twin pregnancies, 33 in triplet pregnancies, and 29 to 31 in quadruplet pregnancies. If multiple pregnancies are more than quadruplets, the probability of the babies being born healthy is very low.

Premature babies are taken to care units. Babies admitted to neonatal care units generally survive, but this is less likely in babies born before 28 weeks. In addition, the service provided by these care units is economically expensive and may pose a problem for families with low incomes.

Expectant Mothers and Childbirth in Multiple Pregnancy

In case of multiple pregnancy in expectant mothers, close follow-up is applied every 2 weeks. When it comes to the last period of pregnancy, this is continued once a week. If a multiple pregnancy is going to be triplets and quadruplets, the expectant mother spends most of the pregnancy in hospital.

There is a risk of diseases such as Diabetes, Anemia and High Blood Pressure in mothers with multiple pregnancies. Against these risks, the expectant mother should be kept under control and in case of discomfort, early diagnosis and treatment should be sought. In addition, expectant mothers should be under the supervision of a Dietitian by paying attention to the nutrition program.

In cases of multiple pregnancies, bleeding can be seen after births, which are usually performed by cesarean section. When this situation increases significantly, the uterus can be removed by operation. In addition, after such births, blood needs usually occur.

Multiple pregnancy also has psychological effects on the mother. Having more than one baby in need of care at the same time can cause problems such as insomnia, chronic fatigue and depression in the mother.
