Egg Collection Procedure in IVF (OPU)
OPU; Egg Collection Process; It is the process of emptying the fluid-filled structures called follicles that contain eggs.
36 hours after the cracking needle, which is the last stage of the egg development process, is injected into the patient, the patient is called to the IVF center two hours before the procedure to be applied, and a sperm sample is taken from his wife and preliminary information is given about the procedure. Since egg collection will be performed, the patient should not eat or drink anything from 24:00 at night. This is a procedure that takes 15-20 minutes under general anesthesia in the operating room.
The patient, who is taken to the operating room, is placed on the gynecological table and the ovaries are accessed with a special needle adapted to the transvaginal ultrasonography probe. By entering each follicle, the follicle fluid is discharged into the tubes with the help of an aspirator. The emptied follicles are examined by embryologists and it is reported whether there are eggs in them. If the egg is not obtained, the follicle cavity is washed with a special liquid and any eggs that may have remained in it are removed. In this way, the process is continued until all follicles are aspirated. After collecting all the eggs over 10 mm, the egg collection process is terminated.
The eggs obtained are separated from the incoming liquid, collected in another container containing culture liquid, their number is determined and stored in special cabinets that provide an environment similar to the mother's womb until fertilization. Eggs collected may differ from the number determined by ultrasound during follow-up. What matters at this stage is how many eggs we have. After the procedure, the patient is awakened and taken to his room to rest.
If all controls are normal after the rest and the patient feels well, then the drug recipes to be used are explained, information is given about the eggs collected and the patient is discharged. There may be mild pain that may occur after this procedure and bleeding in the form of leaks or drops that may continue for several days. Although the pain is not too much after the procedure, it is controlled by the use of painkillers.
